KCCD - H1N1 Virus Information |
|
|
Good Afternoon,
I know each campus has been providing information to staff regarding the swine
flu and we want to keep you updated as new information arises.
Governor Schwarzenegger proclaimed a State of Emergency on Wednesday, April 28
in order to aggressively respond to the current outbreak of Swine Flu in
California. The proclamation can be found at
http://gov.ca.gov/press-release/12149/ . It is important to put into perspective
that only 91 laboratory confirmed cases have been found in the United States.
Let's hope that the preventative measures now being taken are containing the
spread.
The State Chancellor's office is working with the Governor's office to address
the Swine Flu concerns. In the mean time, while this has not affected our area
directly yet, it is important to institute some common sense precautions as this
is highly contagious and there are several cases reported in California. Best
practices include some of the same routine precautions as with any flu:
- Wash hands frequently, especially after coughing and sneezing. Soap and water
are effective, as are alcohol-based hand cleaners. Cover nose and mouth with a
tissue when coughing or sneezing and dispose of the used tissue in the trash. If
no tissue is available, use the inside of the elbow rather than the hand to
screen a cough or sneeze.
- Clean doorknobs, handles, phone receivers, etc.
- Seek medical attention if you develop any flu like symptoms and report/refer
anyone who may be experiencing symptoms.
- Take extra precautions when traveling.

Also, the California Department of Public Health ( www.cdph.ca.gov ) and Kern County Public
Health (
http://www.co.kern.ca.us/health/ ) offices will have further instructions
and helpful information.
The District and each campus’ incident command staff is going to prepare at all
levels to respond to closures or any/all other type of response that could be
activated and/or coordinated with the State Chancellor’s Office, Department of
Public Health and local emergency responder agencies.
Please continue with your diligence and awareness of this health issue and take
all necessary precautions. |
