Inspiration.
That is a core role of education. More than teaching numbers, formulas, and facts, education inspires students to see beyond themselves to a brighter, bigger future. A hopeful future. A future that will change the lives of our students and their children and their children’s children.
Our students come to us to find answers to troubling questions.
How can I earn more to support my family?
How can I become the person I want to be?
How can I change the cycle of poverty I have known?
Can I contribute to my community?
The answer to each of these questions is education. That is why Bakersfield College, Cerro Coso College, and Porterville College--the institutions of the Kern Community College District--share a commitment to one another and to the students we teach. We provide critical job skills that allow students to move up and out of dead-end jobs. We open a porthole for students to view the world and themselves in a new way. We serve as a catalyst to break destructive cycles and form new, beneficial ones. We partner with students to help them build the skills they need to become contributing citizens.
As educational leaders, we are engaging, challenging and inspiring students to embrace lifelong learning. It is not a task we can accomplish alone. Members of our schools’ varied communities are an important part of the equation in meeting this leadership challenge. We are grateful for the partnership with our communities—a partnership that energizes our district with new ideas, financial opportunities, and vision.
Together with our communities we will achieve more. Together we are a team with a shared purpose and commitment to excellence. Together we will inspire students and ourselves to move from good to great. Together we will inspire the kind of life-long learning that improves lives, builds up communities and changes the world.
